Good morning. Here's what's going right.

🌟 Today's Lead

The Elwha Parcels Are on the President's Desk

Melissa Gilman, chair of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, walked the old project lands with park staff before Seattle Times filed. Congress presented H.R. 2388 on 14 October 2026. The enrolled bill would place 1,082.63 acres in trust for the tribe, the first return of these parcels since the Point No Point Treaty of 1855. The dams came out by 2014. The President has not signed.

🔬 A Bleached Coral Lived Because It Touched Its Clone

Science Advances reported on 14 October that five bleached fragments of Pocillopora damicornis recovered within eight weeks after contact with a healthy clone. Fragments kept a few millimetres apart died. The method needs a genetic twin. It is not a reef treatment.

📊 Progress by Numbers

  • 1,082.63 acres in the Elwha bill now on the President's desk. Not signed.
  • 5 of 5 bleached coral fragments in contact with a clone recovered within 8 weeks. Separated controls died.
  • 5,358 megawatts of Australian wind and solar investment decisions by 30 September, above every full year on the regulator's table
  • 13.2 months median survival on daraxonrasib, against 6.7 on chemotherapy, in metastatic pancreatic cancer. The European Commission has not authorised it.
  • 800 after-hours visits at one Minnesota library, on 55 cards. The system has not funded a second branch.

💡 One Thing You Can Do

If your library board is cutting hours, ask whether a card-unlock door is cheaper than pretending the building does not exist after 5. Then ask what it costs per year, and who is allowed in. Wyoming, Minnesota, spent about 70,000 dollars to set one branch up, and about 12,000 a year to keep the lock honest.
