Good morning. Here's what's going right.
🌟 Today's Lead
The Salmon Swim
Jake Lawy got into the River Tone and swam it the way an Atlantic salmon would have to. The water was polluted and low on oxygen. He knew that from the bank. From inside the river it was a different fact. He was one of 18 volunteers trained to spend time as one animal — salmon, red deer, kestrel, otter or earthworm — on a University of the West of England study with the Accelerator for Systemic Risk Assessment. He came back with two asks a parish could actually do: switch off the riverside streetlights, and take out the old weirs. No light has been confirmed switched off. The 30-year plan does not yet have a budget line.
In Brief
☕ 75 to 1
On 14 October, Brazil's Senate voted 75 to 1 for a constitutional amendment cutting the legal working week from 44 hours to 40, ending the six-days-on schedule, without cutting wages. More than 37 million formal-sector workers are covered. It phases in: 42 hours after 60 days, 40 hours a year after that. Informal workers are outside it. The only no vote was Hamilton Mourão.
🩺 The Curve Bent
Seven national surveys, the same oral glucose tolerance test, 34 years. Mauritius went from 14.7% with type 2 diabetes in 1987 to 23.3% in 2009, then down to 19.9% in 2021. That is 11% lower in men and 16% lower in women from the peak. Prediabetes fell from 24.9% to 15.6%. The study cannot say which policy did it, and the data stop in 2021. One adult in five still has it.
🧠 The Barrier
About one in five people carries APOE ε4, the strongest common genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's. Some stay sharp into their 80s. A Columbia team, in Nature Aging, traced that resilience to a rare mutation in the fibronectin gene. The risk gene piles fibronectin around the brain's blood vessels; in mice, lowering it held the blood-brain barrier. No patient has been dosed.
📊 Progress by Numbers
- 18 volunteers, five species, one river in Somerset. Two asks: lights off, weirs out. Neither confirmed done.
- 75 to 1 in the Brazilian Senate. 44 hours down to 40, pay untouched. More than 37 million formal workers. About 14 months to full effect.
- 23.3% to 19.9%. Mauritius, 2009 to 2021, on the oral glucose tolerance test. A fall of 3.4 percentage points, not a cure.
- Nearly twice the fibronectin around the brain's blood vessels in APOE ε4 mice. Lower it, and the barrier held. No drug yet.
- 9,341 hectares. Mount Mabu, the butterfly forest, is now a community conservation area. The management plan is not written.
Also worth your time
Every October and November, hundreds of butterflies gather at dawn on the 1,700-metre summit of Mount Mabu in Zambézia, Mozambique. On 24 August the government gazetted 9,341 hectares as a community conservation area, in the hands of the communities that kept the forest. More than 200 butterfly species are recorded there. The rules about what can be cut are still unwritten.
📻 On Today's Episode
Bright Side Daily for 20 October. Rory and Elizabeth. A man who swam a river as a salmon, a Senate that voted for a weekend, an island that bent a diabetes curve, and a rare mutation that may explain why some people beat the worst Alzheimer's risk gene. The picture at the end is a summit in Mozambique at dawn, covered in butterflies.
