Good morning. Here's what's going right.

🌟 Today's Lead

The Amazon Number Is the Lowest Since the Satellites Started

João Paulo Capobianco called the drop stratospheric at a press conference in Brasília on 16 October. Prodes, the satellite series that has run since 1988, counted 3,335 square kilometres of Amazon clearance in the year to July, down 41.8 percent. The runoff is on 25 October. Fires in Amazonas state are up 253 percent. A low is not a law the next government has to keep.

In Brief

🕰️ The Leap Second Lost the Vote

On 15 October, 69 countries voted in Versailles to stop adding leap seconds from 20 May 2027. Coordinated Universal Time may drift up to an hour from the sky before anyone corrects it. Emily Akkermans, who keeps the clocks at Greenwich, called that a daylight-saving shift that does not end. The leap hour that would close the gap is centuries off. Your watch does not change on Monday.

🌿 Nine Names, Five Hundred Million, Not Yet Spent

Cristián Samper of the Bezos Earth Fund read out nine donors at the COP17 Leaders' Summit in Yerevan. They pledged an additional 500 million dollars by 2030 for threatened species in more than 100 countries. He did not say who pays what share. A UN stocktake in the same city found fewer than half of biodiversity targets on track.

Three adolescents had cone sensitivity in the normal range at six months. The comparison is the untreated eye. Phase 3 has not dosed.

📊 Progress by Numbers

  • 3,335 square kilometres of Amazon clearance, August 2025 to July 2026. Lowest since 1988. Fires in Amazonas are a different table.
  • 69 countries voted to end the leap second. The rule takes effect on 20 May 2027, not this morning.
  • 500 million dollars pledged by 2030 for species recovery. The split among nine donors was not disclosed.
  • 24 months of visual gain in three adults on the low dose of OPGx-LCA5. Six patients total. Not an approval.
  • 1.49 centimetres a year of extra growth with navepegritide, in 84 children with achondroplasia. Europe's Commission has not signed.

💡 One Thing You Can Do

If a biodiversity pledge crosses your desk this week, ask two questions before you share it: who pays what share, and is any of it already in a park account. Yerevan produced a named list and a number. It did not produce a receipt.
