Good morning. Here's what's going right.
🌟 Today's Lead
Eight Weeks of Pills Cleared Hepatitis C as Often as Twelve
Dr Rakesh Aggarwal has spent years watching people quit a hepatitis C course before the virus is gone. His Indian Council of Medical Research trial, published in The Lancet on 30 September and reported in India on 13 October, gave 880 adults without cirrhosis either eight or twelve weeks of sofosbuvir-velpatasvir. Among those who finished and came back for the test, 98.8 percent of the short arm cleared the virus, against 99.0 percent on the long arm. Guidelines have not changed. People with cirrhosis were left out on purpose.
In Brief
🌿 The World's Mangroves Gained 477 Square Kilometres. Indonesia Lost 2,043.
Satellite maps across 108 countries show a net gain of 477 square kilometres since 1985, about 0.3 percent. India added 1,180, helped by tidal canals cut like a fish skeleton. Indonesia lost 2,043. About 65 percent of the new stands sit on ground that never had mangroves.
🔬 Three People, One Injection, and a Safety Board That Said Continue
Life Biosciences presented the first human data for ER-100, a partial reprogramming injection, in three people with glaucoma. No serious adverse events at day 56. Two showed gains on a visual-field test. It is an open-label safety study, not a cure, and not a rewind for the rest of the body.
🦏 Ratu Is Carrying a Fourth Calf. The Father of the Other Calf Is an Uncle.
Two Sumatran rhinos at Way Kambas are pregnant, due around May 2027. Ratu's calf would be her fourth. Delilah's sire is her paternal uncle. The captive program has 11 animals, and every male is related.
📊 Progress by Numbers
- 98.8 percent of patients who finished eight weeks of sofosbuvir-velpatasvir cleared hepatitis C, against 99.0 percent on twelve weeks
- 477 square kilometres of net mangrove gain since 1985, and 2,043 square kilometres lost in Indonesia
- 0 children aged 6 to 8 tested positive for hepatitis B in Albania and Armenia's validation surveys
- 7 leopards, including 2 cubs, identified on South Africa's West Coast after an absence of about 170 years
- 2 of 3 glaucoma patients showed visual-field improvement at day 56 of the ER-100 safety study. Three people is not a proof
💡 One Thing You Can Do
A shorter course only helps if a clinic is allowed to use it. If you work in hepatitis care, ask whether the eight-week evidence has reached the local protocol, and for whom it does not apply. Cirrhosis is still the long course.
