Right Livelihood Award Goes to Women Challenging Authoritarians, Land Grabs and AI Power

Haider, the Rural Women's Assembly, Georgian lawyers, and Timnit Gebru

The 2026 Right Livelihood Award has gone to two women and two women-led organisations. The foundation announced the laureates on 30 September 2026. Jalila Haider, the first woman lawyer from Pakistan's Hazara community, was honoured for challenging ethnic, state and patriarchal persecution. Her firm has helped more than 600 political activists and human-rights defenders regain the freedom to travel. The Rural Women's Assembly was honoured for organising rural women across Southern Africa to defend land, seed and bodily autonomy. One account of the movement puts its reach at about 78,000 small-scale farmers. The Georgian Young Lawyers' Association, the country's first human-rights organisation, was honoured for defending civic space during an autocratic crackdown. Timnit Gebru, founder of the Distributed AI Research Institute, was honoured for challenging concentrated power in artificial intelligence and for building research outside the big labs. She was fired from Google after work warning about the risks of large language models. The prize, founded in 1980, is often called the alternative Nobel. It is for work already underway, not for a future pledge.

Why This Matters

Four regions, one pattern: the people doing the work are building organisations, not waiting for a summit. A travel document, a seed system, a legal aid docket and an independent AI lab are all infrastructure.

What We Don't Know Yet

  • The 78,000 figure is a reported membership scale, not a census we re-counted
  • The announcement is 13 days old, inside the feature window, outside the strict daily window
  • Awards do not protect laureates from the governments they are challenging
