She Asked for the Wing

Helga Duffy, 99, landed at Rendcomb with a Guinness certificate. The outlets do not agree on the day or the previous holder.

She Asked for the Wing

Helga Duffy was strapped to the top wing of a biplane at RFC Rendcomb Airfield in Cirencester, and when the wheels were back on the grass a Guinness World Records adjudicator put a certificate in the day.

The BBC, on 14 October 2026, called her the world's oldest wing-walker. She is 99. She lives in a care home in Devizes, Wiltshire, and she lived for years in Frome, Somerset. She told the BBC she was not frightened, because she was so excited, and that the feeling on the wing was peculiar. She was the eldest of seven. She said her father expected the best of them, and that if he is still somewhere he would be proud of his firstborn.

The money was for Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance. Sam Conway, from the charity, called her a legend. The BBC printed more than £1,300. Discover SWNS, two days later, printed more than £1,600. Both figures are in the cuttings. Neither is a correction of the other that we can see.

The Telegraph, on 16 October, said she was in the air for eight minutes. The record, that paper said, needed five. It also said she has osteoarthritis and a bad right knee, and that she had worried about getting onto the aircraft at all. SWNS printed the same eight minutes. UPI said the flight had been set for her birthday on 23 September and delayed to 16 October. The BBC's publish date is 14 October, and the BBC wrote as if the flight had already happened. Those two calendars do not lock. We are not going to invent the afternoon that squares them.

Who talked her into it is also three sentences. The BBC has a niece who saw Betty Bromage on the news. The Telegraph has a night supervisor at the care home. SWNS has a care-home nurse. Betty, 97, set the women's mark in August and told the BBC she might take it back at 100. The Telegraph also named Harry Heasman, 98, who set a mark at Duxford in May, and said Helga beat him too. BBC and the adjudicator's certificate, as those outlets describe it, say world's oldest. A 98-year-old man in May and a 99-year-old woman in October can both be true if the cards are different. We do not have the Guinness category page in hand. The honest line is that the adjudicator presented a certificate, and the outlets do not describe the previous holder with one name.

Her motto, in the Telegraph and in SWNS: try anything. Don't ever say you can't. You can't see until you've tried.

Key Facts & Figures

  • Helga Duffy, 99, care home in Devizes, Wiltshire; long resident of Frome, Somerset
  • RFC Rendcomb Airfield, Cirencester, Gloucestershire
  • Guinness World Records adjudicator presented a certificate on landing. SWNS names the adjudicator as Will Munford
  • BBC, 14 October 2026: world's oldest wing-walker. Raised more than £1,300 for Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance
  • Telegraph and Discover SWNS, 16 October: eight minutes airborne; the bar was five minutes. SWNS: more than £1,600
  • Telegraph: osteoarthritis and a bad right knee
  • UPI: attempt planned for 23 September, delayed to 16 October. That date fights the BBC's 14 October report
  • Previous names in the cuttings: Betty Bromage, 97, in August; Harry Heasman, 98, at Duxford in May
  • Sam Conway, Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance, called her a legend

Why This Matters

A record with a person in it is the rare news item that does not need a percentage in the first sentence. The percentage problem is the other way round: two charity totals, two calendars, and two possible previous holders. That is the work. The flight still happened. An adjudicator was on the field. A regional air ambulance got a cheque whose size we will not round.

What We Don't Know Yet

  • The single clock time of the flight. BBC and UPI do not agree on the week, let alone the hour.
  • Whether the Guinness card is "oldest person" or "oldest woman," and how Heasman's May mark sits beside it.
  • Which fundraising total is current. £1,300 and £1,600 are both printed. We will not average them.
  • Which conversation put her on the wing. Niece, night supervisor, and nurse are all in the copy.
