Finland's Groundbreaking Cross-Border Solar Project Marks EU Renewable Energy Milestone
Loukkaanaro Solar Park becomes first RENEWFM-supported project to go online
Finland has achieved a significant renewable energy milestone with the commissioning of the Loukkaanaro Solar Park, the first project supported under the EU's innovative Renewable Energy Financing Mechanism (RENEWFM) to become operational. Located in Utajärvi in Northern Finland, the facility features approximately 30,000 panels generating 20 MWp of capacity.
The solar park is expected to produce around 15,000 MWh of renewable electricity annually while preventing approximately 1,540 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year over its 30-year operational life. The €2.35 million investment support demonstrates how EU-level financing can accelerate renewable energy deployment across member states.
As the largest photovoltaic installation in northern Finland, the project proves that solar energy can be viable even in high-latitude regions with challenging weather conditions. This success could encourage similar developments across Nordic countries, traditionally considered less suitable for solar power.
The RENEWFM mechanism enables cross-border cooperation on renewable energy projects, allowing countries to pool resources and expertise to meet EU climate targets more efficiently. Finland's success with this inaugural project could serve as a template for future cross-border renewable energy initiatives.
